Executive Director’s Message July 2016

Thu 30 Jun, 2016 - Director's Message

Summer officially begins with back-to-back long weekends for the Saint-Jean and Canada Day. Now it is officially open season to seize every opportunity for terraces, picnics, barbecues, festivals, and getting out of town to enjoy the splendour of nature.

Arts Alive! Québec combines all the pleasures of summer with day-trips to some of the prettiest communities in Quebec. The opening weekend in Hudson was a joy, as was the pre-festival press conference in Huntingdon. I would have loved to get to Quebec City this past weekend, but my son was getting married in Montreal. All was well at the wedding, and reports from the Morrin Centre were equally positive. The four remaining Arts Alive! weekends are booked in my calendar and I look forward to seeing ELAN members and friends at these festival showcases for artists. See below for dates, locations, and programming.

Arts Alive Québec 2016

Mon 02 May, 2016 - News

Last summer ELAN worked with community partners in Hudson, Québec City, Saint-Anne de Bellevue, Knowlton, Huntingdon and Wakefield to produce local arts festivals between June and October.
ELAN has received funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Community Cultural Action Fund for Arts Alive Québec 2016.

This year our partners are accepting submissions from ELAN members to propose performances or workshops.  The Community Cultural Action Fund requires each community to promote the work of local artists so they can only hire artists who live in their region.

Hudson/Montérégie:  Kalina Skulska (kskulska@hotmail.com)

ACE (Arts, Communities, Education) Initiative

Mon 02 May, 2016 - News

For many years, ELAN has sought opportunities to increase connections between artists and the education system. Benefits for artists – such as paid employment through workshops and programs, and opportunities to use creative skills in new environments and expand networks -- are clear, and the positive effects for students are well documented. It would appear to be a win-win proposition and yet, despite goodwill and persistent efforts, it has been surprisingly difficult to build significant bridges between the arts and education sectors.

ELAN’s newest project hopes to change that. Funded by  the Government of Canada through Canadian Heritage’s Strategic Fund, the ACE (Arts, Communities, Education) Initiative is a two-year project that will mobilize arts and education partners in all regions of Quebec.

Director's Message May 2016

Mon 02 May, 2016 - Director's Message

Quebec’s Ministry of Culture recently announced a review of its Cultural Policy, the first since the policy was created back in the early 90s. That was before the digital revolution changed most of the rules for how art is produced, presented, promoted and purchased. Quebec’s review was launched with a call for briefs from organizations wishing to participate in public hearings in May, which are postponed due to Minister Luc Fortin’s leave of absence. ELAN submitted a preliminary brief on April 8, which you can see here.
